I can’t believe it’s been 5 years since I quit my job and my long-time career, to start EggFund.
At the time it seemed paradoxically a radical, yet natural decision.
After experiencing 3 miscarriages, failed IVF, a disappearing egg donor, and the loss of $80K of our life savings, I was at the lowest point in my life. Geoff, my husband, encouraged me to think about what I was putting myself, my body through, and I made the hard choice to give up the dream of my family.
It was right then, at my lowest point, that the idea for EggFund was born. I was venting to a good friend about the experience and wishing someone had shaken me 10 years earlier and told me to start preparing for my family and not to take my fertility for granted. We are conditioned to prepare for college, wedding, retirement, but somehow preparing to have a family is not openly discussed. It’s as if we, as a collective, are hiding our heads in the sand and I knew too many people who could no longer afford to do that.
The desire to help empower patients while they are on what I call, “the rollercoaster ride of infertility” is in the DNA of EggFund. We strive to alleviate what we can of the stresses of infertility, which impacts people financially, emotionally and physically.
By starting EggFund, I felt that if I couldn’t have a family, I would spend the rest of my life helping other people like me realize their families, and have a better experience in the process. The irony is that after starting EggFund, I found out I was spontaneously pregnant with my now 3 ¾ year old, Elisabeth. I was 45 years old at the time, and we know our miracle baby is a result of EggFund’s creation.
I am so proud of what we built with EggFund. We are not only the first, but we are the largest fertility and family financing platform. We have already helped hundreds of families. Soon it will be thousands of families, then tens of thousands. What is better than that?
Even with our talented team and our best efforts and intentions, we couldn’t have accomplished this without the intended parents who have trusted EggFund with this most important life journey. We feel so grateful and humbled to have been able to play a role in realizing their family-building dreams.
We also would like to thank our clinic and industry partners, some of the most dedicated group of people one could ever have the joy of working with. Lastly, the larger fertility community, our friends, advisory board, our co-advocates for infertility rights, who helped guide me while I learned my way around the industry. My love and respect to some of the kindest people I have ever known.
It has been a thrilling journey, and we can’t wait to help create even more families as we continue to grow, and to help more partners and intended parents who are hearing about us, and seeking us out, from around the US and internationally.
